Minors

When seeking an abortion in Massachusetts, a patient under 16 years old is considered a Minor.

The Massachusetts Parental Consent Abortion Law requires that one parent or guardian consents to a Minor’s abortion. The parent or guardian must accompany the patient, and must bring a photo ID. The patient must bring a full birth certificate with the seal on it. The parent or guardian must be listed on the birth certificate and his/her ID must have the same name as present on the birth certificate. If the name is different he/she must bring documentation to show how that name changed (divorce, marriage, etc.)

If you are a Minor and cannot tell your parents or guardian about your decision to have an abortion, there is another option. The Massachusetts Judicial Bypass Law allows you to see a judge and ask for an order to have an abortion without parental/guardian consent. The judge does not decide if you can have an abortion, only if you are mature enough to make your own decision about your pregnancy.

If you request this assistance, we will connect you with a lawyer that will represent you free of charge. The lawyer will accompany you to court to acquire the Judicial Bypass Document (usually issued that same day), so you can obtain an abortion without parental consent.
